Batsugun
Batsugun is a vertically scrolling "shooting 'em up" hailing from the now deceased Japanese game developer Toaplan.
Toaplan was a video game developer from Japan. They were responsible for the creation of a wide array of relatively famous scrolling shooters and arcade games, yet the company declared bankruptcy in 1994.
Today, they are best known for Zero Wing, the source of the "All your base are belong to us" phenomenon.
Originally developed for the arcade Batsugun saw two revisions - the first being released in 1993. The latter named Batsugun Special Version was shown at the AOU (Arcade Operators Union) show in Japan but was never released as Toaplan slid into bankruptcy. After Toaplan's bankruptcy the Special Version appeared on the 2nd hand market. The two revisions were released on the Sega Saturn The Sega Saturn.
Heralded by some as the first manic shooter, Batsugun involved employees who would go on to form and work at Cave. Cave is a Japanese video game company, known in the West primarily for its incredibly manic shoot-'em-ups. Cave remains one of the most active makers of arcade shoot-'em-ups in the Japanese market. The company was formed primarily from the remains of Toaplan, and several of their early games are considered to be spirtual successors to prior Toaplan works, in particular Batsugun.
Batsugun saw an evolution in the use of complex bullet and enemy patterns and player fire power and hit-box.
